How studying Culinary Nutrition changed my life… in the kitchen

There I was, I had recently graduated as a holistic nutritionist and learned a ton about nutrition and alternative medicine in school. I am now strongly of the belief that if you want to eat healthy, you need to cook. From scratch. At home. Not every time but often.

We had all this wonderful knowledge about how foods can help to manage disease and in many cases reverse it but what about now bringing this wisdom into the kitchen and learning how to use it hands-on? This is when I looked at studying Culinary Nutrition. There was only one problem: it would mean leaving my imaginary cubicle and stepping out of my comfort zone. Why? Because reality is that cooking often doesn’t come easy to many people – including me.

I’m not a foodie

The opposite would be more fitting. Ever since my teenage years I remember having a love and hate relationship with food. Emotional eating, binging and dieting has all been on my menu at some point in my life. So did I have a passion for food? Not really, but I believe that it is crucial for everyone – not just nutritionists and healthcare practitioners but anybody – to know what foods fuel our bodies and what poisons us and why.

The kitchen is (was!) not my favourite room in the house

Growing up I didn’t really spend much time in the kitchen or helping my mum to cook (microwave and fridge anyone?). Having my own children now, I obviously know how important it is to feed them well, however, often we don’t know what that actually means, or how we can make that happen with the limited amount of time that a lot of us have. In the Culinary Nutrition Expert (CNE) program, you learn about the best and most effective tools in the kitchen, how to effectively plan and cook your meals, so that you don’t need to spend hours in that corner of your house.

Teaching cooking classes is not on top of my list

Although I enjoyed (shocking, I know!) having to put together a cooking workshop back in nutrition school, I was equally happy when it was over. So if you’d ask me whether I want to put on cooking classes, the answer is probably no. Now, here is how I see it. It’s like putting on a cooking class for your children, learning how to create culinary nutrition habits and use your time in the kitchen efficiently and effectively.

Coming up with ideas and following recipes has always been painful

How often have you looked at a recipe and either didn’t have that particular ingredient, didn’t know where to get it or didn’t know what to replace it with? It happens all the time and you get annoyed and discouraged. Learning how to cook also means learning how to read and follow recipes and make adjustments so that it works for you and your family.

The Culinary Nutrition Expert Program

So besides the many obvious reasons why to become a Culinary Nutrition Expert, it’s important to look beyond and understand how you can apply these essential skills to your everyday life.

Even if you don’t love cooking, if you struggle to find the time to make health-building meals or if you don’t even know where to start, learning how to cook should be on everybody’s radar, especially with today’s food industry making it extremely hard to stay on track. When you decide to dive into culinary nutrition, you are well on your way to move ahead in your journey towards optimal health – professionally or personally.
